A few rays of sunlight cut an intense blue sky above the statue of an Angel along the Ponte Sant'Angelo (Saint Angel bridge), in the historic and baroque heart of Rome. This bridge was built under the emperor Hadrian in 134 AD. to connect the heart of Rome with his mausoleum, currently Castel Sant'Angelo. A few centuries later, under the pontificate of Pope Clement IX, the architect and sculptor Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini was commissioned to create the current balustrade decorated with ten statues of the Angels of the Passion of Christ. According to tradition, it was Bernini's pupils who sculpted the statues of the Angels in 1669. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Unveiled in 1900, funded by philanthropist Henry Rosenberg (1824-1893) upon his death willed to the city of Galveston, fifty thousand dollars for this monument to be built to honor the heroes of the victory of the Texas Revolution in 1836.  Lady Victory stands atop the monument holding a wreath stretched toward the north into the state of Texas.  This bronze sculpture was the second tallest at the time next to the William Penn sculpture atop Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
