However, due to the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy, the work was interrupted; it was only thanks to San Giovanni Bosco that construction could be resumed in 1880 and completed in 1887 by the architect Francesco Vespignani. The mosaic on the central tympanum (above the main gate) of the 19th-century Duomo was crafted in Venice in 1886 based on designs by Nicolò Barabino. It shows Christ seated on a throne, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist. It also includes local saints, notably St Reparata and St Zenobius, who serve as patrons of Florence. The lilies in the foreground symbolize Florence while the blue orb in Christ's left hand symbolises the world or the universe.
