A beautifully restored L-4 Grasshopper flies by at Massey Aerodrome, a small grass field on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.\n\nThe L-4 Grasshopper is a light observation and liaison aircraft that served with distinction during World War II. Developed by Piper Aircraft Corporation, the L-4 Grasshopper was a militarized version of the Piper J-3 Cub, a popular civilian aircraft of the era.\n\nThe primary role of the L-4 Grasshopper was observation, reconnaissance, and liaison duties. It was used for artillery spotting, aerial photography, courier missions, and communication tasks, providing vital support to ground troops.\n\nThe L-4 Grasshopper saw extensive service during World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Forces, the U.S. Navy (as the NE-1), and other Allied air forces. It played a vital role in numerous campaigns, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Pacific island-hopping campaign.

The airplane shown is a Stearman PT-17 biplane which was used by the US Army and US Navy to train pilots leading up to, and during, WWII.  The airplane was used in basic, or primary, training of new pilots.  The photo shows the full airplane from the right front quarter view.  One can see the silhouette of the pilot's head in the cockpit.  The engine is not running.  The markings on the lower wing can be seen and show US Army.  The photo is a classic sepia tone and evokes a clear feeling of history and nostalgia.
