This is part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal as it passes through Georgetown Washington DC under 31st NW. The canal was operated as a method of conducting commerce from 1831 until 1924. Canal historians estimate approximately 35,000 laborers helped dig the canal as well as build aqueducts, culverts, locks, lock houses, etc. It took 22 years to build the canal from Georgetown, DC to Cumberland, MD. Much of the workforce was made up of immigrants from Ireland and Western Europe. Today, the canal is a park that contains 184.5 miles of towpath and numerous miles of hiking trails to explore.

Georgetown is a historic neighborhood and commercial district of Washington, D.C.

The Pennyfield Lock has been restored on the C&O Canal and appears in working order except for the leakage. Otherwise, yet another C&O Canal picture in the heat of summer. But it is chained and padlocked, I mean a locked lock, couldn't resist.

The photo was taken Ocober 30th. 2022 at Dam 5, Potomac river, USA. The power plant is a two-story brick building on the West Virginia side of the river. It was built circa 1900 as the Honeywood paper mill. The dam is included in Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.

Hiking in Brecon Beacons National Park

The D+R (Delaware and Raritan) Canal was a major shipping channel back in the day for NJ. Now it's just a great place to go for a walk. This is one of the few remaining locks that would help raise and lower the barges. You can get the feelings of control and strength from this scene
