Leaves and spines of the Guanaco Acacia (Maihuenia poeppigii), one of the southern-most species of cactus in Chile and a member of a genus (Maihuenia) that seems to have no close relations among the wider cactus family. Low to short mat-forming, often rather straggling, perennial. Leaves alternate, bright green, often tinged with red,4-12mm, oval cylindrical. Flowers white, 6-9mm, in much branched flat-topped clusters on erect stems; follicles pink, erect.
This picture shows a close-up view of a marine environment during low tide. There is a large, red-purple starfish in the center, splayed out along the crevices of some dark, wet rocks. The starfish has a textured, mottled appearance, with hints of white dots sprinkled over its surface, which may be indicative of a rocky or coral-like skin. Surrounding the starfish are what appear to be various sea anemones or barnacles with green-brown hues, and they have a bulbous appearance, tightly packed on the rocks. To the lower left, there is some dark green, wet seaweed, its strands spreading on the rock surface. The colors in the image are rich, depicting a diverse array of marine life and suggesting a vibrant ecosystem within a tide pool or coastal rock formation.
