Tree sparrows have suffered a staggering 93% decline since 1970, with house sparrows not fairing much better, having seen a more than 70% decline in the same time. Reassuringly, recent Breeding Bird Survey data also suggests that numbers of both species may have stabilised or even begun to increase slightly in recent years

An adult male House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) rests on a farmhouse roof in central Chile. This species was originally from Europe but has spread worldwide, sometimes as a result of the deliberate introduction by emigrating humans. As in Europe, the species likes to remain near human habitations and often nests in cracks and loose fittings around buildings.
