This goose, seen consorting with a gaggle of Canada geese on Heron Pond near the River Thames in Surrey, England, presents some curious features. While resembling the wild greylag goose, it is fatter, and it also has a white nose band resembling that of the white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons). Such a mix-up of genes is not unusual in geese, and the best way to describe this bird is probably 'domesticated greylag goose'. (The coot seen at bottom left has just been pushed from its perch by the goose, and is waiting to claim it back.) Greylag geese (Anser anser) are ancestors of our common domestic geese.
