Lake Mead in Nevada, USA, close to the Grand Canyon national park. Lake Mead, when full, is the largest reservoir in the United States in terms of maximum water capacity. It is on the Colorado River about 39 km from the Las Vegas Strip southeast of the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the states of Nevada and Arizona. Formed by the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead is 180 km long when the lake is full, has 1,221 km of shoreline, is 162 m at greatest depth, with a surface elevation of 372.3 m above sea level, and has 640 km2 of surface, and when filled to available capacity, 32.22 km3 of water. However, the lake has not reached full capacity since 1983 due to a combination of drought and increased water demand. Owing to current low water level, Lake Sakakawea holds claim over Lake Mead in terms of America's largest reservoir by total area and water in reserve. The reservoir serves water to the states of Arizona, Nevada and California, providing sustenance to nearly 20 million people and large areas of farmland.

Lake Mead at Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam towers above the Colorado River, a marvel of engineering and a testament to human ingenuity. Built during the Great Depression, the dam provided thousands of jobs and transformed the arid landscape of the American Southwest, generating hydroelectric power and providing water for irrigation and drinking. The massive concrete structure spans the Black Canyon, holding back the mighty Colorado River and creating the vast Lake Mead. Visitors can take guided tours of the dam's interior, marveling at the complex machinery and learning about the history of this iconic landmark. The Hoover Dam stands as a symbol of American resilience and resourcefulness, a testament to the power of human cooperation and determination.

An image of the Hoover Dam, an engineering marvel spanning the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada. This monumental structure is not only a symbol of human ingenuity but also a striking feature within the stark desert landscape, showcasing the dramatic interplay between nature and technology.
A prolonged drought in the West, the reservoir created by the Hoover Dam, pictured here in 2010, sunk to its lowest level ever raising concerns about reduced output from the dam hydroelectric plan.
