Stock photo of lichen in the winter in Northern California at Milagra Ridge in Pacifica, California.
A lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae. They come in many colors, sizes, and forms and are sometimes plant-like, but lichens are not plants. They may have tiny, leafless branches. Common names for lichens may contain the word moss.\n\nThey are a favorite food of Cariboo and other wildlife.\n\nThis photo was taken in Park Des Grand Jardins in Quebec, on a high altitude plateau with cold winter temperatures. The mosses have adapted to survive in some of the most extreme environments on Earth, such as arctic tundra.

Photomicrograph of rotifer, probably Rotaria rotatoria. Rapidly rotating cilia at top of head, internal organs visible. Green circles are algae. Live specimen. Original image at 40X, wet mount, transmitted brightfield illumination. Indistinct image due to motion blur of live specimen and very shallow depth of field of brightfield illumination.
