Hot Air Balloons air-to-air view. These multicoloured striped hot air balloons fly serenely in a crystal clear blue sky. Hot air balloons are lighter-than-air aircraft consisting of a bag, or envelope, containing heated air. Suspended beneath is a gondola or wicker basket, which carries passengers and a heat source, normally an open flame created by burning liquid propane. The heated air inside the envelope creates buoyancy, with a lower density than the colder air outside the envelope. Hot air balloons cannot fly beyond the atmosphere. The envelope is not sealed at the bottom, as the air inside the envelope is at equal pressure to the surrounding air. In modern sport balloons the envelope is generally made from nylon fabric, and the inlet of the balloon is made from a fire-resistant material such as Nomex
