The Capitoline Hill (Latin: Collis Capitolinus pronounced, between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the seven hills of Rome. By the 16th century, Capitolinus had become Campidoglio in the Roman dialect. The English word capitol derives from Capitoline. The Capitoline contains few ancient ground-level ruins, as they are almost entirely covered up by Medieval and Renaissance palaces (now housing the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza, a significant urban plan designed by Michelangelo.

Rome, Italy, September 07 -- Dozens of tourists rest in a garden in front of the National Monument of the Altare della Patria, in the historic heart of Rome. The Altare della Patria, or Vittoriano, was built in 1885 in neoclassical style in honor of the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II near the Roman Forum, between the north side of the Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio) and the central Piazza Venezia. Inside is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a War Memorial dedicated to all the Italian soldiers who died in the war. The Altare della Patria is the scene of all the official Italian civic celebrations, in particular the Republic Day on June 2 and the Liberation Day on April 25.
