The magnificent frescoed vault of the transept, the presbytery and the apse inside the Duomo or Cathedral of San Lorenzo, in the medieval heart of Perugia, in Umbria, central Italy. The Duomo di San Lorenzo (Cathedral of Saint Lawrence), was built in Gothic style starting from 1345 and completed in 1490. The Gothic structures were decorated in the 18th century with marbled stucco and fine gilding. The ribbed vaults supported by octagonal pillars were entirely decorated by numerous painters, including Francesco Appiani, Vincenzo Monotti, Valentino Carattoli, Carlo Spiridione Mariotti, Marcello Leopardi and Domenico Sergardi. Founded by the Etruscans on an ancient Umbrian settlement, Perugia is one of the most loved and visited medieval Italian cities, rich in artistic and architectural treasures that span almost three thousand years of history. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the quality of the olive oil produced in these lands.
