Black bear standing to check out a bird feeder in Washington, Connecticut, in rural Litchfield County, mid-April. There are an estimated 1,500 bears in the state. They have been sighted in every Connecticut town and city. Though the fourth-ranked state in population density, Connecticut is the 14th most forested, providing good bear habitat. The state recently enacted a law against feeding bears and urges people to take down their bird feeders by mid-March, when bears awaken from their winter sleep.

Unlike its name suggests, a black bear's fur ranges from grey to blue-grey, black, cinnamon and even white! Adults are between 5–6 ft long and can weigh between 200–600 lbs. While this may sound large, black bears are the smallest North American bear.

He's looking at the photographer on a deck, but what he really wants is a mate. He may weigh 500 pounds.
