Pelvetiopsis Algae, Pelvetiopsis limitata, Phaeophyta, Fucaceae, Salt Point State Park, California. This perennial brown alga stands between 4-8cm tall and is light tan to olive in color arising from a small discoid holdfast. The densely branched thallus is cylindrical at the base, becoming flattened to cylindrical in the upper fronds.

$Rockweed (Fucus gardneri) has lacy mounds of flat, greenish-brown leaves. It is a brown hairless alga that is part of intertidal life along the Pacific North American coast. When mature, the tips become bladders that puff up with a mixture of gas bubbles and jelly to make it float in the water. This allows the wide, mitten- like blades of the seaweed to be exposed to sunlight. These blades are used as a location for fish to lay eggs and sperm. The Holdfast is the section that keeps the seaweed anchored to a rock, so it doesn’t wash ashore with the tides. The Blades are wide to catch sunlight for photosynthesis.The tips are edible. Settlers referred to them as “Indian popcorn” because Aboriginal Tribes dried them to eat. \nOther names are bladderwrack and popweed.$
