Medium to tall, rather robust, foetid perennial with leafy overwintering stems. Leaves palate, deep green, lobes simple, toothed. Flowers nodding, yellowish-green with a purple rim, bell-shaped10-30mm, in large clusters. Fruit a cluster of 3 follicles.\nHabitat: Woodland, often with beech and yew, scrub and rocky places, generally on rather dry, shallow calcareous soils. Flowering season: January-May.\nDistribution: Western Europe (I know the species wild in Eastern Belgium). Widely cultivated in Gardens.\nAll parts of the plant are poisonous.\n\nThis Picture is made during a Trip in the Southern Part of Belgium in June 2006.

Helleborus niger, also called Christmas rose, Winter rose or Black hellebore, is an evergreen, perennial flowering plant in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Christmas rose plant is toxic. The flowers of five petals come in various colors, including white, red, pink, purple, green, yellow and apricot, and appear during winter, often at Christmas, in mild climates and in late spring in colder areas.

Fruit greenish, but seldom produced.\nHabitat: Shady places on moist soils, to 2400m.\nFlowering Season: April-May.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, except the far North.\n\nThis is a quite scarce Species in the described Habitats in the Eastern and Southern Parts of the Netherlands.
