I ventured out of my snowbound house on Sunday with cameras in tow, and made it to Rowena without incident. My car has very little ground clearance, so most places were off limits. Rowena Crest, however, was plowed.

Icebergs are large chunks of ice that break off from glaciers. This process is called calving. Icebergs float in the ocean, but are made of frozen freshwater, not saltwater. Most icebergs in the Northern Hemisphere break off from glaciers in Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

The ice is beginning to break up. Warmer temperatures are rising in Alaska and the ice near Knik Arm, just outside of Palmer, Alaska, begins to recede back to the ocean waters.

A glacier terminus, toe, or snout, is the end of a glacier at any given point in time. Although glaciers seem motionless to the observer, in reality they are in endless motion and the glacier terminus is always either advancing or retreating.
