The common hazel, also called hazel bush or hazelnut shrub, is a species of the birch family. It is a deciduous shrub that is usually around five meters high, native to Europe and Asia Minor and very common in Central Europe. The hazel flower indicates the so-called early spring.
Deciduous Shrub to 6m, rather upright with smooth brown bark. Leaves rounded, short pointed, toothed, downy. Flowers appearing before the leaves, male catkins yellow, pendent; female flowers tiny, bud-like, with reddish styles.\nFlowering Season: January-March. \nFruit a nut, solitary or several together, each enclosed in a leafy husk, edible.\nHabitat: Woods and hedgerows, to 1800m.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, except the far north.\nThe wood is used for fencing and basket making.\n\nThese Catkins are one of the first signs of Spring!
