Since the 1690'ies Holmen in Copenhagen was the Naval Station with piers, shipyards and storage facilities. As a military facility it was completely closed to the public. In 1993 the naval station was closed and converted into an attractive district with housing, restaurants, cafés and a wealth of schools for the creative arts. In 2005 the new Danish National Opera House on Holmen was inaugurated.
