The pea shrub is a deciduous, strongly branched and erect shrub. It can reach a height of four to six meters. Young shoots of the shrub are initially still finely hairy and later bare. The bark is olive-green to brown-gray in color. The seeds have been used as poultry feed in the past and as human food in times of need. Due to gastrointestinal complaints of some children, which probably originated from the consumption of raw seeds, the BfR considers this to be incorrect and sees a need for further research due to the lack of reliable findings.
