Some of the iconic Moai statues of Easter Island, half buried in the soil near the quarry at the extinct volcano of Rano Raraku. This quarry is known as the birthplace of the Moai and the Moai seen here had begun their journey to their respective Ahu (stone platforms) but for some reason never made it any further.\n\nThe Moai were constructed around five or six hundred years ago and represent the islanders' ancestors. They were all toppled after a period of tribal warfare broke out, though a number were restored in the twentieth century.
