Male downy woodpecker landing on a branch in a white spruce tree, late autumn in New England. A small, common, tame woodpecker of North America that often visits bird feeders. The red spot on the back of the head identifies this individual as a male. Like most woodpeckers, the downy is zygodactyl, with two toes in front and two in back, an arrangement that helps it grip tree trunks and branches. A stiff tail props up the downy as it drills into bark for wood-boring insects and their larvae.
