It was built between 1823 and 1827 for King Karl XIV Johan, the first Bernadotte King of Sweden. The palace was designed by architects Fredrik Blom and Fredrik August Lidstromer. Since 1913, the Rosendal Palace is a museum of the Karl Johan period and of the life of Karl XIV Johan.

Looking at the famous Royal Palace (Norwegian: Slottet or Det kongelige slott) in Oslo, Norway. It was built in the first half of the 19th century as the Norwegian residence of the French-born King Charles III John of Norway, who reigned as king of Norway and Sweden. The palace is the official residence of the current Norwegian monarch while the Crown Prince resides at Skaugum in Asker west of Oslo.\nThe palace is located at the end of Karl Johans gate in central Oslo and is surrounded by the Palace Park with the Palace Square in the front. In front of the castle is the so called Slottsplassen ('The Palace Square'). It is located in front of the Royal Palace, and was designed by Hans Linstow together with the Palace and the Royal Palace Park. Its most prominent feature is the statue of Charles John of Norway and Sweden, sculpted by Brynjulf Bergslien and erected in 1875.
