It was designed as a versatile intermediate cannon. Its initial version was called 40L60, because the tube has a theoretical length equal to 60 times the caliber. It was manufactured in Sweden by the Bofors company itself, but also licensed in many other countries. It achieved a prestigious status thanks to his efficiency and great success during the London defence of the Battle of Britain.
