Located at the Magnolia Plantation in Ashley, South Carolina this is one of the few remaining homes where the workers on the plantation lived with their families.  Founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, Magnolia Plantation is one of the oldest plantations in the south.  The grounds of this plantation are the oldest public gardens in America.
The Cherokee Heritage Center, where the tribe's history, culture and arts are preserved and celebrated, also has an authentic Cherokee Village dating from 1710 on its property and more recent structures.  It is located within the boundaries of the historic Cherokee Female Seminary and includes a village, research center and holds the archives of the Cherokee Nation.
The old Dan Lawson cabin in the Cades Cove section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was reported to have been both a residence and the Cades Cove post office at one time in its history.

The slave community, comprised of men, women and children, worked in the field or in the Oak Alley mansion. Following the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, many formerly enslaved individuals found themselves trapped in sharecropping arrangements, struggling to pay off debts and secure a better future.
