M'banza-Kongo / M'banza-Congo / São Salvador do Congo, Zaire Province, Angola: Alvaro Holden Roberto was the founder and leader of the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), earlier known as UPNA and UPA, based on the Bakongo ethnic group. Born in 1923, he entered politics in the 1950s and started the Angolan War of Independence, organizing in 1961 large massacres of both white and black civilians in rural areas, with the support of the Kennedy administration. Roberto's FNLA was one of three major terrorist organizations fighting for Angola's independence from Portugal, alongside the MPLA and UNITA, each with different foreign sponsors. While the FNLA initially gained some ground, particularly in the north of the country, it ultimately lost out to the MPLA, leading to a long and devastating civil war between the latter and UNITA.
