The magnificent frescoes by Giotto inside the Basilica di San Francesco (Basilica of Saint Francis), in the medieval heart of Assisi, in Umbria. Built in the Italian Gothic style starting from 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica preserves the mortal remains of the Saint of the Poor from 1230. In the image, some of the 28 walls frescoed by Giotto between 1292 and 1305, illustrating the life of the Saint of Assisi, from his vocation to death. Over the centuries Assisi and the spirituality of these places have become a world reference point for peace, tolerance and solidarity between all the peoples and different confessions. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Built in the Italian Gothic style starting from 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica preserves the mortal remains of the Saint of the Poor since 1230. In the image: the nave, the rose window and some of the famous 28 walls frescoed by Giotto between 1292 and 1305, in which the life of the Saint of Assisi is narrated, from his vocation to his death. Below the rose window it is possible to see the damage caused to the Basilica and to the frescoes by the earthquake of 26 September 1997. Rome, Italy - May 12, 2018: The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is located in the Castro Pretorio district, near Termini Station and was built between 1879 and 1887 at the behest of Pope Pius IX who, in 1870, laid the foundation stone of the new building. However, due to the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy, the work was interrupted; it was only thanks to San Giovanni Bosco that construction could be resumed in 1880 and completed in 1887 by the architect Francesco Vespignani.
