Pollen grains from a variety of plants. Pollen grain size, shape and surface texture differ from one plant species to another. The pollen grains contain a male gamete (reproductive cell) that is intended to fertilise an egg or ovule (female gamete). This will initiate the formation of a seed for a new plant. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), magnified x250 when printed at 10cm wide.
Yeast cells - 3d rendered image SEM (scanning electron micrograph) view of cells of brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). It is used in the production of beer, wine and bread.

A nematocyst darting from a hydroid (Ectopleura larynx) with explosive force. Ectopleura larynx is a marine animal usually found attached to sunken ropes, floating buoys, mussel shells, rocks and seaweed. Like jellyfish, it is armed with stinging cells equipped with nematocysts used to capture and subdue prey. The hydroid nematocysts are not harmful to humans, as the stinger cannot penetrate sufficiently into human skin to inflict any harm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) magnified x3875 when printed at 10cm wide.

Hydrated and de-hydrated pollen grains (Stellaria graminea). All living pollen grains are able to absorb and release water. Thus, each grain can exist in either of two morphologically different states, the de-hydrated and the hydrated condition. S. graminea is a common plant of waysides, hedgerows and open woodlands. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), magnified x1500 when printed at 10cm wide.
