Medium to tall tufted perennial, hairless or slightly hairy; stems erect, unbranched. Leaves opposite, heart shaped to lanceolate, short stalked. Flowers greenish-yellowish-white, 5-10mm, in clusters of 6-8 at the base of the upper leaves. Fruit 5-6mm, hairless.\nHabitat: Woods, rocky places, bare ground, generally on calcareous soils, to 1800m.\nFlowering Season: June-September.\nDistribution: Continental Europe north to S Scandinavia.\nVery poisonous plant. The fruits split along one side to release the seeds, which each have a tuft of hairs at one end for dispersal by wind.\n\nThis Picture is made during a Long Weekend in the South of Belgium in June 2019.
Menyanthes trifoliata (Buckbean) Native North American Wetland Wildflower
Saururus chinensis, commonly called Asian lizard’s tail, has attractive, green foliage with white splotches on the leaves at the top of the plant. It is native to wetlands, including water gardens, meadows, marshes, ditches, swampy forested areas, fields and roadsides in East Asia. Minute, spicily fragrant, white to yellowish-white flowers bloom in early to mid-summer (June-August). Each flower spike resembles the tail of a lizard, hence the common name.

This is a wildflower bank alongside a road in Mitcham, Surrey. Regarding the prominent yellow flower, lady's bedstraw, legend relates that Our Lady the Virgin Mary prepared the manger in Bethlehem with bedstraw. This herb's honey-scented flowers and hay-scented dried foliage were traditionally used as mattress stuffing. In the Middle Ages it was used to colour lady's hair, giving rise to the alternative name 'maid's hair'. In the background is wild mignonette ((Reseda lutea)), and a large dock plant.
