City of Mahon, Menorca, Spain - September 8, 2012: Fiestas de La Mare de Déu de Gràcia. This festival marks the end of Minorca's busy summer and it is one of the highlighted events of the annual festival calendar, which takes place in the capital, Mahon. The beautiful black horses from the local area are paraded spectacularly throughout the streets. The festival is concentrated near the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in the city centre and horses are ridden by professional riders who show off their skills and perform elaborate acts for the crowds. After the parade of the day, people gather to the city centre for music and dancing.

Gubbio, Umbria, Italy, May 15 -- A scene of the traditional and ancient Festa dei Ceri in the historic heart of the medieval town of Gubbio in Umbria. The celebration consists of a race of three wooden columns weighing almost 300 kg each, called Ceri, carried on the shoulders of dozens of bearers, on top of which are placed the statues of Sant'Ubaldo (Saint Ubaldo) protector of Gubbio, San Giorgio (Saint George) and Sant'Antonio Abate (Saint Anthony). The race develops along the streets and alleys of Gubbio up to the summit of Monte Ingino where the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo is located. This religious celebration, much loved by the whole community of Gubbio, is considered one of the oldest in Italy and in the world and its origins date back to the 12th century. Gualdo Tadino, Umbria, Italy, October 02 -- A scene from the traditional Palio di San Michele Arcangelo (Palio of St Archangel Michael) in the medieval town of Gualdo Tadino, in Umbria. An ancient three-day festival that involves the entire community in a traditional Corteo Storico (Historical and Allegoric Parade) and culminates with a donkey race between the four 'contrade' (districts) of this medieval town.
