Rome, Italy - April 5, 2019: Piazza Navona with crowds of people, probably mostly tourists, on a sunny morning in spring. The piazza (city square) was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian (Stadio di Domiziano), also known as the Circus Agonalis, commissioned around AD 80 by the Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus as a gift to the people of Rome. It was originally mostly used for athletic contests. In the background is the Fountain of the four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Bernini) with the Egyptian obelisk. The large building to the left is the Sant'Agnese in Agone, a 17th-century Baroque church. The early Christian Saint Agnes was martyred in the ancient Stadium of Domitian. Construction began in 1652.
The Fountain of the Four Rivers depicts Gods of the four great rivers : the Nile in Africa, the Ganges in Asia, the Danube in Europe and the Río de la Plata in America. View of the Ganges: it carries a long oar, representing the river’s navigability.
