Compton, England - March 9, 2019: the Watts Chapel is the work of Mary Watts, artist and wife of George Frederic Watts (one of the most celebrated artists of the second half of the 19th century), and the people of Compton in Surrey. It was designed in 1895 and eventually consecrated in 1898. It is built in brick and decorated with beautiful terracotta reliefs, created at the Watts' house and pottery very close by using local clay. The photograph shows the central band running around the extraordinary interior decorated in 1901 in coloured gesso relief by Mary Watts and around 80 members of the local community in a largely Art Nouveau style with complex symbolism, including Celtic influences. The figures on the walls include angels, surrounded by cherubs' heads on the ribs of the vault; a 'Tree of Life' in gesso runs throughout the decorative scheme. It remains a working village parish chapel, having been given to the people of Compton by Mary and G F Watts, both of whom are buried in the cemetery in which the building is located. The Watts Chapel is open to the public without charge.
