The Grey Francolin, Francolinus pondicerianus, also previously referred to as the Grey Partridge (but not the European Grey Partridge), is a species of Francolin native to the plains and more arid parts of South Asia - but was also introduced into the tropical Indian Ocean island of Mauritius around the middle of the 18th century as a gamebird. A pair are seen here foraging on grassland in the west coast of Mauritius near Black River. Males measure about 34 centimetres and females about 30 centimetres. Both have brown plumage which is barred over their full length. They live primarily on the ground, as they are weak flyers, and will only fly a short distance if necessary to do so. They forage on bare and low grassland, feeding on seeds, grain, insects and termites and beetles. Good copy space.
