Matera is a city in the south of Italy, region Basilicata, well known for its rock-cut urban core, whose twin cliffside zones are known as the Sassi (cave houses). An idyllic cityscape of the old town of Matera, in southern Italy, known worldwide as 'Sassi di Matera' (Matera's Stones). At the center stands the majestic facade and the bell tower of the Duomo, or Cathedral of the Madonna della Bruna and of Sant'Eustachio, built in the Apulian Romanesque style in the 13th century. The ancient city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world, with a human presence that dates back to more than 9,000 years ago, in the Paleolithic period. The Matera settlement stands on two rocky limestone hills called 'Sassi' (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano), where the first human communities lived in the caves of the area. The rock cavities have served over the centuries as a primitive dwelling, foundations and material for the construction of houses, roads and beautiful churches, making Matera a unique city in the world. In 1993 the Sassi of Matera were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Super wide angle image in 16:9 and High Definition format.
Rebuilt following the devastating earthquake of 1693, Modica's architecture has been recognised as providing outstanding testimony to the exuberant genius and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe and, along with other towns in the Val di Noto, is part of UNESCO Heritage Sites in Italy.

Matera (Basilicata, Italy) is located on a canyon, which defines Matera’s landscape and architecture. Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, established by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, the town is famous for its cave dwellings. The Sassi di Matera is the ancient town of houses carved into the rock. People lived here until the 1950s, but then they were moved because the place needed restoration. Today pubs, restaurants and hotels are found in this location.
