Terrain permitting, hospitals at frontier forts were preferentially sited on the highest point in the complex. This might be a holdover from the European practice of building hospitals and sanitaria on high ground—itself a relic of the Roman belief that disease was caused by bad air, hence malaria. But, army hospitals doubled as scientific centers, and elevation permitted optimal weather observation.

In 1908, Thomas Murphy was an early Mormon settler from Idaho. Many of his original structures no longer survive and in 1920 he sold the property to Joe Heninger who remained for about 20 years. Eventually, Heninger sold his ranch to John Moulton, who passed it to his son, Reed. Reed and his wife Shirley stayed here until 1953 when John sold the properties to the National Park Service. Three generations of Moultons still made the ranch home until Reed's untimely death in a car crash in 1973. In 1976, the last Mormon Row harvest took place and on John's death at 103 in 1990, the NPS bought the land.

On the eastern plains of Colorado, a few dilapidated buildings including the distant water tower, church and home remain in the ghost town of Keota, abandoned during the 1930s dust bowl days when drought plagued the area.

Acoma Pueblo is a Native American pueblo located sixty miles west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Pueblo people are descends from the Anasazi, Mogollon, and other ancient peoples. The influences from the ancient tribes are seen in the architecture and the artistry of Acoma.
