Rome, Italy, November 11 -- A view of the Piazza della Repubblica (Republic Square), in the historic heart of Rome, with the Fontana delle Naiadi (Fountain of the Naiads) in the center, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, built among the archaeological remains of the ancient Baths of Diocletian, in the background. The Fountain of the Naiads was built in 1870 during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX, a few days before the conquest of Rome by the troops of the Kingdom of Italy and the end of the temporal power of the papacy, by the artists Mario Rutelli e Alessandro Guerrieri. Piazza della Repubblica is located on the edge of the Rione Monti and the central Via Nazionale. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
