Perugia was founded by the Etruscans more than 3000 years ago. Beautiful historical buildings like the stately Corso Vannucci and the Piazza IV Novembre, but also small alleys and cosy terraces make Perugia an absolute must-see destination. It is also a modern city with an international university, a mini-metro and underground escalators which partly run through centuries-old tunnels and then bring you back up to the inner city.
Perugia, Province of Perugia, Umbria, Italy - 24 april 2023: At the center of piazza IV novembre is the Fontana Maggiore, the urban and visual pivot of the square. Work from the second half of the 1200s by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano for the design and decoration, with the technical and architectural collaboration of Fra Bevignate and, for the hydraulic part, of Boninsegna Veneziano. Overall, the decorations evoke the political and cultural program of the Perugia municipality.
Piazza Navona is lined with Baroque palaces and was once Domitan’s Stadium. It contains three fountains; the central one, the Fountain of the Rivers, is Bernini’s masterpiece. It represents the Nile, Ganges, Danube and Plate Rivers.
Perugia, Umbria, Italy: the main square with the fountain Fontana Maggiore and the ancient Palazzo dei Priori
A suggestive view of Piazza IV Novembre with the Fontana Maggiore and the Duomo in the historical and artistic heart of Perugia, capital of the Umbria region, in central Italy. The Fontana Maggiore (Mayor Fountain), built in 1275 as a terminal of the medieval aqueduct, is composed of two polygonal marble basins concentric decorated with bas-reliefs sculpted by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano with symbols and scenes of the agrarian tradition and feudal culture, the months of the year with the zodiac signs and the liberal arts, some characters from the Bible and from the history of ancient Rome. In the background, the side façade of the Duomo di San Lorenzo (Cathedral of Saint Lawrence), built in Gothic style starting from 1345 and completed in 1490 and characterized by its splendid pink marbles, and the Loggia di Braccio, built in 1423. Founded by the Etruscans on an ancient Umbrian settlement, Perugia is one of the most loved and visited medieval Italian cities, rich in artistic and architectural treasures that span almost three thousand years of history. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the quality of the olive oil produced in these lands.
