Le Plan-de-la-Tour, called until October 3, 2008 Plan-de-la-Tour, is a French commune located in the department of Var in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its inhabitants are the Plantourians and the Plantouriannes.\n\nLocated 9 km from the sea, the nearest towns are Sainte-Maxime 9 km, La Garde-Freinet 11 km, Grimaud 13 km, Cogolin 14 km, Saint-Tropez 19 km.\n\nIsolated by the difficulties of access related to its relief and, also, by the insecurity which struck the shores of the sea, the current valley of Préconil, formerly known under the name of Val d'Avignon, remained uninhabited for a long time or sparsely inhabited. In the sixteenth century, in these wide open spaces, near inexhaustible water points during the long period of summer drought, a few bastides appeared, intended to meet the demands of agricultural, forestry and family life. These bastides will gradually become hamlets, initially bringing together the descendants of the same family. This is the germ of the type of society which has been perpetuated, with respect for traditions, and which has long been expressed in a rural landscape inseparable from the society which had created it.\n\nOne of these hamlets, Saint-Martin, the center of the present village, would become the de facto, then de jure, capital of the community which, since the 16th century, had settled in common geographical locations.
