Architectural detail of the roof of Fantoft medieval wooden tarred stave church in the City of Bergen on the west cost of Norway in spring. The image shows details of the roof with dragon heads and a Christian Cross. The dragon heads served to ward off evil spirits and was used by the vikings as to decorate jewellery, accessories and weapons and placed on the bow of their ships (as well as on the roof of buildings). The church was originally built around the year 1150 at Fortun in Sogn (in the Sognefjord). Threatened with demolition as a new church had been built to replace the old, the stave church was bought by consul Fredrik Georg Gade and saved by moving it in pieces to Fantoft in 1883. On 6 June 1992, the church was destroyed by arson. Reconstruction of the church began soon after the fire and was completed in 1997.

The Eidsborg Stave Church is believed to be built between 1250 and 1270 and is one of the best preserved examples of 28 protected stave churches in Norway. This is quite a contrast to the Middle Ages when there were more than 1000 stave churches in the country. This unique building form is seen as Norway’s contribution to world architecture. The church was restored in 2005-2008 and is still in use. The stave church is of a kind that has the exterior covered entirely with chipping.
