Thresher Shark in Malapascua
Blacktip Reef Shark Carcharhinus melanopterus occurs in the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific from the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands and the Tuamoto Archipelago, north to Japan and south to Australia and through the Suez Canal in the eastern Mediterranean, in a depth range from 0-75m, max. length 200cm. Rainbow Runners Elagatis bipinnulata inbetween the sharks. The species occurs circumtropical and subtropical in a depth range from 0-150m, usually 2-10m, max. length 180cm, usually 90cm. Palau announced 2009 world's first shark sanctuary, banned all commercial shark fishing within its exclusive economic zone. 600000 sq km (230,000 sq mi) of ocean are protected now. As a result, divers see more sharks here than anywhere else! Palau, near German Channel, 7°7'13.279 N 134°16'23.389 E at 1m depth. This is a composite photo.

The species is common on coral reefs, often in deeper areas near drop-offs to the open sea, in atoll passes, and in shallow lagoons adjacent to areas of strong currents in a depth range from 1-275m. Max. length female 172cm, male 255cm. Palau announced 2009 world's first shark sanctuary, banned all commercial shark fishing within its exclusive economic zone. 600000 sq km (230,000 sq mi) of ocean are protected now.
