The ring-tailed lemur, Lemur catta is a large strepsirrhine primate and the most recognized lemur due to its long, black and white ringed tail.Like all lemurs it is endemic to the island of Madagascar

Ring-tailed lemurs live in groups that are led, for most of the year, by a dominant female. The exception is during the breeding season, when males begin to compete for females with their rivals. The groups stick together and defend their territory using a series of tail signals, smells and sounds. Like all lemurs, this species is endemic to Madagascar and is under great threat from poaching and habitat destruction by expanding farms. A recent estimate warns that the ring-tailed lemur population in the wild has declined by 95% since the year 2000, and in some places less than 30 individuals remain.
