The Camperdown Elm (Ulmus glabra 'Camperdownii') in Port Gamble, Washington State, is a notable example of a rare and unique tree. The Camperdown Elm is a cultivar of the Wych Elm and is known for its distinct weeping habit and contorted branches. The original Camperdown Elm was discovered in the early 19th century on the estate of the Earl of Camperdown in Dundee, Scotland. All existing Camperdown Elms are clones of this original tree, as the cultivar does not produce viable seeds.\n\nIn Port Gamble, the Camperdown Elm has become a cherished landmark. The tree's history in the area is tied to the town's 19th-century roots as a mill town. The tree likely arrived in Port Gamble as part of the landscaping efforts when the town was being developed by the Puget Mill Company, which sought to create a picturesque community for its workers.
