Pilatus, also often referred to as Mount Pilatus, is a mountain massif overlooking Lucerne in Central Switzerland. It is composed of several peaks, of which the highest (2,128.5 m [6,983 ft]) is named Tomlishorn.

A stunning series of four images taken on the ride up to the summit of Mount Titlis in Central Switzerland. This mountain towers above Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstattersee) and at 3401m or 10,000 ft above Sea Level it is one of the highest peaks in the Bernese Oberland, surpassed only by those mountains in the Jungfrau massif, about 30 miles to the West. The Aerial Gondola Cableway covers the first two legs of the journey starting in the typical green alpine valley at Engleberg but this rapidly turns to white snow & ice the snow line, which at this time of year is very high and only fell a week ago from over 4000m to just 2500m. In high summer the cableway therefore starts in the green alpine fieds stocked full with excitement, and then reaches the stark natural beauty of the ice and snow covered slopes near the summit, which are white and ski-able all year round. The journey takes around 10-15 minutes from valley bottom to mountain peak, climbing some 2500m as it does so, over meadow, rock and finally ice with a temperature differential of 36 degrees Celsius or more on a hot summer's day where the valley bottom could be basking in 36C and the mountain top languishing at at -4C - temperature being a differential of some 40 degrees or more. The sheer scale and majesty of the landscape, as well as the enormity of the undertaking to build it large enough to efficiently accommodate the numbers of travelling public, the impressive Civil Engineering that has been undertaken to establish such a great route to the summit is stunningly protrayed in these dramatic images.This fourth and final image is looking down on the descending car dwarfed by the landscape over which it is travelling, the Lake of Traubsee and the green alps and cloud below clearly visible. Once again the exceptionally clean car is dramatically reflecting the ice and rock over which it glides.
