Pyrgus malvae, the grizzled skipper, is a butterfly species from the family Hesperiidae. It is a small skipper (butterfly) with a chequered pattern on its wings that appears to be black and white. This butterfly can be found throughout Europe and is common in central and southern regions of England. The butterfly prefers three major types of habitat: woodland, grassland, and industrial. Eggs are laid on plants that will provide warmth and proper nutrition for development, such as A. euphoria. As larvae, their movement is usually restricted to a single plant, on which they will build tents, unless they move onto a second host plant. Larvae then spin cocoons, usually on the last host plant they have occupied, where they remain until spring. Upon emerging as adult butterflies, grizzled skippers are quite active during the day and tend to favour blue or violet-coloured plants for food. They also possess multiple methods of communication; for example, vibrations are used to communicate with ants, and chemical secretions play a role in mating. Exhibiting territorial behaviour, males apply perching and patrolling strategies to mate with a desired female.\nHabitat: \nAlthough grizzled skippers occupy three major forms of habitats, they tend to settle in environments with spring nectar plants, larval food plants (agrimony, creeping cinquefoil, wild strawberry, tormentil), ranker vegetation, and edges with scrub or woodland. Host plants are from the family Rosaceae with a focus on Agrimonia eupatoria as well as Potentilla. \nFlight Season: \nGrizzled skippers produce one brood per season and are in flight from the middle of March to the middle of July. \n\nThis Picture is made during a long weekend in the South of Belgium in June 2006.

Plebeius argus is a scarce resident in the Netherlands. The distribution shrunk during the last century. It is no longer found in the coastal dunes, except for those on the Frisian Islands.\nThe species is classified as vulnerable on the 2006 Red List. This is an European Species with a increase in the Southern Parts of Europe.\nHabitat: This Blue butterfly occurs on both dry and wet Heathland, often in the transition zone between the wet and drier parts. The habitat has short, sparse vegetation and patches of bare ground, with young seedlings of Calluna vulgaris or Erica tetralix, the preferred larval food plants.\nFlight Season: The species flies in one generation from the end of June until early August and hibernates as an egg. Various ants, notable Lasius species, are attracted to the caterpillars and pupae.\n\nTo keep the Heathland in the early stages of succession, measures, such as sod cutting on a small scale and extensive grazing, are recommended.\n\nThis Picture is made in the Province of Utrecht in the end of June 2022.

Plebeius agestis (the old name) is a fairly scarce resident. The species suffered a decline in the mid-20th century; since the early 1960s, its area of distribution has halved. the Dutch Monitoring Scheme shows a moderate decline in numbers since 1990. The species is classified as 'susceptible' on the 2006 Red List.\nBrown Argus Butterfly occurs on nutrient-poor grasslands on dry, sandy soils in an open landscape, as in the (coastal) dunes and along dykes, roads and railways tracks.\nSeveral species of Geraniaceae are used as larval food plant.\nThe species flies in two generations from early May until early September, and hibernates as a half-grown caterpillar.\n\nThis is not a common Species in the Netherlands.
