The Kachina Wetlands is a 70-acre area owned and managed by Kachina Village Improvement District. The 8 ponds on site are primarily used for the evaporation of treated wastewater but have attracted numerous species of wildlife. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded since 2004. Of those, 65 are wetland-associated species that would not be present without the ponds. Another outstanding feature is the view of the nearby San Francisco Peaks. Lake Mary is a set of twin lakes located in northern Arizona near the city of Flagstaff. Upper Lake Mary is generally the larger of the two lakes and holds water all year round, while Lower Lake Mary is often dry or only holds water during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. There are dams on both Upper and Lower Lake Mary. The dams impound the water from Walnut Creek which flows downstream from Walnut Canyon.\n \nThe construction of Lower Lake Mary dam began in 1901 and was completed in 1907. The earthen dam was constructed to provide crucial water storage for the growing population of Flagstaff and its surrounding communities. The lower dam is 33 feet high and 650 feet long. The Lower Lake Mary reservoir has a normal storage capacity of 11,029-acre feet.\n\nTo provide additional water storage for the area, the construction of Upper Lake Mary dam and water treatment plant began several decades later, in 1941. The dam was built several miles upstream from Lower Lake Mary to provide additional water storage for the area. In 1951, Upper Lake Mary Dam was raised an additional 10 feet to its current height of 40 feet which increased the normal storage capacity to 16,300 acre-feet.\n\nLake Mary is also a popular destination for bird watchers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts. The area around the lake is home to a wide variety of bird species, including bald eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons. \n\nLake Mary is an essential part of the Northern Arizona community, providing water for local farms, businesses, and residents. The dams also help to prevent flooding in the downstream area during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. Lake Mary is in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
