Galanthus nivalis was described by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum in 1753, and given the specific epithet nivalis, meaning snowy (Galanthus means with milk-white flowers).

Celastrina argiolus is a common resident in the Netherlands. The species is distributed in a great part of Europe, except Scotland and Northern Scandinavia. It occurs in a variety of habitats, even in City centres. The larval food plants differ between the spring and summer generation. In Spring, the females often lay their eggs on Rhamnus frangula and Ilex aquifolium. In summer, they tend to use later flowering species like Hedera helix, Calluna vulgaris or Lythrum salicaria. Holly Blue flies in two generations from mid-April until end-August and hibernates as pupa. During the 20th century numbers probably remained stable.

Farfugium japonicum is a clump-forming perennial that is grown in gardens as much for its attractive foliage as for its autumn flowers. It is native to moist meadows and stream banks in Japan and eastern Asia. Daisy-like, yellow flowers bloom in loose corymbs atop thick, mostly leafless stalks that rise above the foliage in late summer to fall.
