The Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) is a 'swamp hen' in the rail family. Various subspecies of the bird occur in the Mediterranean countries, Africa, tropical Asia, Australasia  (where this example was photographed), Indonesia, and the Philippines.
