The Norman castle keep was built by Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, in 1165 with the gatehouse being constructed around the late 13th century. The Bothwell Castle was built in the 13th century in a strategic crossing point of the river Clyde and played a key role in Scotland's Wars of Independence.
