A statue of Captain John Smith in Bow Churchyard off Cheapside in the City of London. Captain Smith (1580-1631) was head of the settlement of Jamestown in Virginia. He was born in Blackwall, beside the River Thames and after returning to London in 1609-10 he died in 1631. The statue was presented to the City of London by the Jamestown Foundation of the Commonwealth of Virgina in 1960 and was erected here because it was near to the old site of Cordwainers’ Hall and Smith had been a cordwainer - a maker of shoes.
