The Arizona Meteor Crater (Barringer Meteorite Crater) formed 50,000 years ago when an asteroid plunged through the Earth’s atmosphere and crashed into what is now central Arizona. This area was not populated by humans at the time. Because of Arizona’s dry climate and the crater’s relatively young age, Meteor Crater is the best preserved impact crater on Earth. The small asteroid was just 150 feet across. Traveling at around 8 miles per second the force of the impact was tremendous. In just a few seconds the crater was formed when millions of tons of rock were thrown out. Today Meteor Crater is a famous tourist attraction with a museum featuring displays about the history of the crater. Scientist from all over the world come to Meteor Crater to study it. Meteor Crater is near Winslow, Arizona, USA.

Homol'ovi is a Hopi word which means “Place of the Little Hills.” The name is very appropriate since the area is mostly flat with several buttes and other small mounds. Between approximately 1260 and 1400 CE, the area was occupied by the Ancestral Hopi. Several large villages were established during this period. These villages were part of a larger network of settlements in the region, connected through trade and shared cultural practices. The remains of these villages contain numerous artifacts, including pottery shards, stone tools, and remnants of structures. The Homolovi sites provide important insights into the lives of the Ancestral Hopi, their agricultural practices, and their interactions with neighboring cultures. By the late 14th century, the Homolovi villages were largely abandoned, likely due to environmental changes, resource depletion, or social factors. Homolovi State Park, north of Winslow, Arizona, USA was established in 1986 with the help of the Hopi tribe who considered these lands a part of their ancestral homeland. The park presently serves as a center of archeological research. It is located near the Little Colorado River in a floodplain where the natives farmed their crops. The largest of the park’s pueblos at one time contained an estimated 1,200 - 2,000 rooms. The only remaining structure is the kiva in the oldest section of the pueblo. The kiva was an underground house used for religious purposes. The Hopi people continue to make pilgrimages to the site to renew the ties of their people to the land. Also, the Hopi Tribe is actively involved in the management and interpretation of the park, ensuring that their ancestral heritage is respectfully and accurately represented. Homolovi State Park today is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Ancestral Hopi and their connection to the land. It offers a unique opportunity to explore and learn about the ancient cultures that once thrived in the region.

Attracted to the lush flood plain of the Paayu, native people arrived at Homolovi around 1330AD. They came from the Hopi Mesas which are 60 miles north. The Paayu is now known as the Little Colorado River. About 750 to 1000 people lived here, in a 1200 room village. They farmed corn, beans, squash and cotton in the flood plain and sand dunes. They also gathered native wild foods growing in the area and hunted for beaver, antelope, deer, elk and waterfowl. The Homolovi people left the Little Colorado River valley sometime prior to 1400AD and probably made their way back to their ancestral villages on the Hopi Mesas. In the 1960’s the ancient dwellings were threatened by illegal collectors of ancient artifacts. Homolovi State Park was eventually established to protect the artifacts and dwellings. Homolovi State Park is near Winslow, Arizona, USA.
