Italy. Aosta Valley. Valley of Cogne (Grand Paradise National Park). Spotted Longhorn (Strangalia maculata, or Rutpela maculata, family: Cerambycidae). It is a beetle species widespread in Europe. Larvae feed on various trees. Adults feed on pollen and nectar. They live for a month and then die after mating. The elytra are yellow spotted with black to imitate the color of wasps and defending the insect by birds and other predators.

Cuckoo wasp (aka emerald wasp) on Queen Anne's lace (aka wild carrot) in summer, Connecticut. A small, brilliantly colored, parasitic wasp that lays its eggs in the nests of other insects. So named because cuckoos (i.e., birds) are brood parasites as well.
